Meet the Zero hour Team

Amelia Southern Uribe, a Colombian-American journalist and climate activist, is pursuing a dual degree in Advertising/Public Relations and Political Science with a minor in Sustainability at the University of Arkansas. Southern-Uribe serves as the Founder and President of Zero Hour Arkansas, and Director of Southeastern United States chapters for Zero Hour national. At the University of Arkansas, they are the Chair of the Sustainability Coalition, a Board member for Arkansas Environmental policy summit, a Board member of the Arkansas Environmental Education Association and Director of Sustainability for Student Government. Under Amelia’s leadership, Zero Hour Arkansas has diverted an astonishing 238,128 pounds of waste on campus and has grown Zero Hour’s work in Arkansas far beyond campus boundaries. Amelia is the Editor In-Chief and Founder of ROOTS magazine, a publication exploring the intersection of art, education, and environmental justice. In its first year, ROOTS distributed 150 free copies to Arkansas residents and students, fostering crucial conversations around marginalized identities and environmental justice. Recognized as a 2023 Udall Scholar, Amelia's journey is marked by awards, including the 2022 City of Fayetteville Environmental Steward, 2023 National Association of Campus Activities’ Best Sustainable Event, and Alumni of Yale Young Global Scholars program.
